An arrest has been made in Waikato after a man stole bank cards from elderly people, then pretended to be a police officer to get their PIN numbers.

Police said, so far, 40 offences had been identified but they expected to get more complaints.

They said the man gained access to homes by various ruses, including pretending to have lost a dove, and stole wallets.

A little later, they said, the offender would call the victims pretending to be a police officer and asking them for their PIN numbers so the police could stop any transactions.

He would then take money from their accounts.

A 39-year-old man arrested in Otorohanga faces charges of burglary, theft, impersonating a police officer, obtaining by deception and using a document for pecuniary advantage.
