The Hamilton City Council has commissioned the international consultancy company, Pricewaterhouse Coopers to undertake an external review of the city's zoo.
An independent review was announced in November after the council said it wanted to ensure the ratepayer-owned zoo delivered value for money and is a safe place for staff, animals and visitors.
It follows the death of a keeper who was attacked by one of the zoo's tigers.
The council said the review will cover animal enclosures, staffing, operating procedures, health and safety and risk management, and opportunities to improve the zoo.
It was expected to be finished next month.
