One person is believed dead after a car crashed into the Waikato River at Mercer.
Police said a passenger had managed to escape but the driver did not when the car went into the river about 1.30pm.
The car was fully submerged.
Officers have been using a boat to stabilise it as they try to recover the driver's body.
