The Green Party says the Government could become implicated in the United States spying scandal because of New Zealand's membership of the 'Five Eyes' pact. The US is facing protests from angry European allies accusing its National Security Agency of spying on their leaders and citizens. Germany said it had learned Chancellor Angela Merkel's cellphone may have been monitored and Germany, Spain and France have learned intelligence has been gathered on millions of their citizens' phone calls and online communications. A senior US intelligence official has told a House committee that discerning foreign leaders' intentions is a key goal of US spying operations. New Zealand is part of the intelligence-sharing arrangement with the US, Britain, Australia and Canada.
