American basketball journeyman Elijah Obade, 23, has been getting his first taste of life in New Zealand after joining the Wellington Saints for this year’s NBL season.
“My momma always told me: ‘You know, if you’re good at something stick to it’. And she always told me: ‘If you’re good at something don’t do it for free’,” he says.
Playing at centre, Elijah hopes to make it to the NBA one day, but says: “I’m pretty chill. I’m just taking everything in for what it is and just relaxing, and enjoying being able to play basketball for a living because not very many people get to do this.”
While he's been totally committed to basketball since arriving - there's hopes of a championship - he's enjoyed his time so far. “It's very diverse here, there's a lot of different kinds of people and that's what I like.”
If you want to see what skills Elijah's got, the Wellington Saints are playing their second home game for the season at TSB Arena tonight. Facing off against the Southland Sharks, the Saints are 3-0 so far and will be looking to keep their winning streak.
