Stabbings shock community

9:04 am on 25 June 2014

Community leaders are calling for calm in the wake of two stabbings at schools in south Auckland, Radio New Zealand reports.

An 11-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after being stabbed at Pacific Christian School in Mangere Bridge on Tuesday morning. It's believed he was in a fight with another pupil.

In a second, unrelated, incident just a few hours later, two teenagers were seriously injured after a fight outside another Mangere school, Southern Cross Campus.

A student who attends the school said one of the boys injured was stabbed with a pocket knife.

Inspector Shawn Rutene said police were not yet sure how the fight at Pacific Christian School started, and would not confirm if the boy was stabbed with scissors.

A member of the Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board, Nick Bakulich, said the two incidents had shocked the local community.

Bakulich wants the community to get together and work out what it can do to help ensure the safety of students.
