A fire inside an Auckland strip club has been extinguished, and the downtown street re-opened.

Fire and Emergency crews were called at about 11.30am on Wednesday to the Customs Street venue Showgirls.

Staff at the scene elevated the call to a second alarm.

Crews fought the blaze from both sides of the building.

Eight fire trucks were on the scene at its peak, with the fire reaching between 20 and 30 metres inside the venue.

Fire and Emergency said they left the scene at 2.45pm after undertaking salvage, with the cause of the fire still being investigated.

Customs Street East between Commerce and Gore Streets has reopened after the earlier closure, which delayed traffic.
