Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Friday

The Situation

A trough moves onto the North Island today. A low is forecast to develop on the trough east of the North Island early on Tuesday, with an unsettled and strong southerly flow covering central New Zealand.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland and Auckland

Showers, possibly heavy, clearing for a time this evening, possibly thundery tomorrow morning. Clearing Auckland tomorrow afternoon.

Waikato to Taumarunui, including Coromandel and Western Bay of Plenty

Isolated showers, possibly heavy, spreading from the west this afternoon, clearing to fine tomorrow evening.

Eastern Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, also Taupo and Taihape

Showers developing this afternoon, possibly heavy with thunderstorms, becoming isolated for a time tonight and tomorrow morning.

Taranaki to Wellington, also Wairarapa, Marlborough and Canterbury

Showers, some heavy with possible thunderstorms today. Turning to rain tomorrow morning. Easing to isolated showers in the afternoon.

Nelson, Buller

Showers and possible thunderstorms, easing tonight. Becoming fine tomorrow afternoon.

Westland and Fiordland

Mainly fine.

Southland and Otago

Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers contracting to the coast tomorrow evening.

Chatham Islands

Periods of rain. Southeasterlies.

Wednesday

North Island: Scattered showers for most, especially inland during the afternoon and evening. South Island: Mainly fine. Scattered showers in the east, spreading elsewhere for a time in the afternoon and evening.

Thursday

North Island: Mainly fine. Isolated showers about the ranges and west coast. South Island: Mainly fine. Isolated showers in the northwest spreading elsewhere from afternoon. Late rain in the south.

Friday

North Island: Scattered rain, possibly heavy, spreading from the west from late morning. South Island: Rain spreading north, possibly heavy.

And at the Chathams

Mostly cloudy with periods of rain, easing to showers on Friday as east to southeast winds turn southerly.
