Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday
The Situation
A front moves across the North Island today then moves away to the north of New Zealand tomorrow, followed by strong southerlies. Meanwhile a deep low develops to the east of the country and a ridge of high pressure builds over the South Island.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland to Waitomo, including Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taupo
Cloudy periods today, and showers spreading north this afternoon and evening, some heavy, with possible thunderstorms in the west. Fine tomorrow.
Taumarunui to Kapiti, including Taihape
Occasional rain today, heavy at times with possible thunderstorms and hail. Partly cloudy with a few showers tomorrow.
Gisborne to Wairarapa, also Wellington
Showers spreading north today, some heavy and possibly thundery with hail, gradually easing tomorrow.
Marlborough and Nelson
Showers today, some heavy with thunderstorms and hail. Mostly fine tomorrow, with showers about the Kaikoura Coast.
Buller to Westland
Fine spells today, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms about the ranges. Fine tomorrow.
Canterbury, Otago, Southland and Fiordland
Scattered rain or showers, with possible thunderstorms about the south coast, clearing tomorrow and becoming fine.
Chatham Islands
Periods of rain, possibly heavy. Southeast gales developing tomorrow.

Thursday
North Island: Occasional showers in the east and south, gradually easing. Mostly fine elsewhere. South Island: Generally fine. Chance of a shower in the north, and a few showers developing in the far south late in the day.
Friday
North Island: Showers about Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, clearing. Mainly fine otherwise. South Island: Showers spreading north, but remaining fine about Nelson and Marlborough.
Saturday
North Island: Showers developing in the west and south, and spreading elsewhere later. South Island: Scattered showers.
And at the Chathams
Periods of rain, easing to showers on Friday. Gale southeasterlies gradually easing, and turning southwest on Friday.
