Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday

The Situation

A broad area of low pressure lies over New Zealand. A weak front moves across the North Island from the west today through Thursday morning.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland

A few showers.

Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty

Rain spreading south today, easing to showers about Auckland this evening then clearing overnight. Areas of fog at first tomorrow then fine spells, and isolated afternoon showers.

Waitomo to Manawatu, including the central high country

Scattered rain today, clearing early tomorrow. Low cloud or fog tomorrow morning then fine breaks, and a possible afternoon shower.

Gisborne to Wairarapa, also Horowhenua to Wellington, Nelson, and Marlborough

Mostly cloudy. Scattered rain developing this afternoon or evening, clearing about the North Island tomorrow evening.

Buller, Westland and Fiordland

Cloudy periods, and one or two showers near the coast.

Canterbury, Otago and Southland

Mostly cloudy about the coast and Plains, with patchy drizzle. Generally fine elsewhere, with areas of low cloud or fog.

Chatham Islands

Cloudy periods.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Friday

North Island: Rain developing about the northern half of the island, possibly heavy, with scattered falls elsewhere. South Island: Periods of rain in the west and north. Partly cloudy elsewhere, with the odd shower in south Canterbury to Southland.

Saturday

North Island: Rain, possibly heavy in the east and north, easing to isolated showers later in the day except around the Gisborne region. South Island: Showers in the west. Early isolated showers elsewhere clearing, then mainly fine.

Sunday

Showers developing across the North Island, and showers or widespread rain for the west South Island. Thunderstorms possible in western areas. Partly cloudy with isolated showers for the east South Island.

And at the Chathams

Partly cloudy with a shower or two on Friday, then periods of rain for Saturday and Sunday, possibly heavy at times. Northeasterlies, strengthening to gale by late Saturday, then easing on Sunday.
