Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday
The Situation
A broad trough moves over the country today. A low forms on the trough to the east of the South Island, then deepens and passes south of the Chatham Island overnight. Tomorrow a strong southwest flow over the country eases as a ridge of high pressure builds from the west.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland to Taranaki, including Taumarunui
Showers clearing to fine this evening, apart from the odd one remaining becoming about the west coast until tomorrow afternoon.
Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Taupo, Gisborne, and Hawke's Bay
Scattered showers clearing to fine tonight.
Whanganui to Wellington, including Taihape and Wairarapa
Showers, with possible thunderstorms in Wairarapa this afternoon, easing and becoming isolated this evening. Becoming fine tomorrow afternoon.
Buller, Marlborough, Nelson
Scattered rain easing this evening. Becoming fine tomorrow morning apart from isolated showers for Buller.
Canterbury
Scattered rain, possibly thundery this afternoon, clearing this evening. Severe southwest gales about Banks Peninsula this afternoon. Fine tomorrow.
Grey to Fiordland, also Otago and Southland
Scattered showers clearing to fine along the west coast and Otago today, but redeveloping for Fiordland tomorrow morning.
Chatham Islands
Fine until evening, then rain with possible thunderstorms and gale westerlies.

Thursday
North Island: Fine. South Island: Occasional rain in Fiordland. Mainly fine elsewhere, apart from isolated showers in the south.
Friday
North Island: Fine, apart from isolated showers about the Kapiti Coast, and areas north of Taupo. South Island: Rain in Fiordland, and a few showers in Westland. Fine elsewhere, but late rain for Southland.
Saturday
North Island: Fine apart from a few showers in the northeast and from Coromandel Peninsula northwards. South Island: Fine in the north. Partly cloudy elsewhere with rain or showers clearing the west and south.
And at the Chathams
Cloudy periods and showers, clearing to fine early Friday. A shower or two Saturday afternoon. Southwesterlies gradually easing on Thursday. Northwesterlies developing later Friday, turning southwesterly late Saturday.
