Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Monday

The Situation

A strong cold southerly flow over covers the North Island, as a weak cold front moves off to the north this afternoon. A narrow ridge is passing over the South Island, followed a cold front arriving Southland early Friday. The cold front reaches Wellington Friday evening, followed by cold southwesterlies.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northern half of the North Island from Taranaki and Taupo northwards, including Bay of Plenty

Fine, apart from the odd shower about coastal Northland today. Areas of frost overnight.

Gisborne and Hawke's Bay

Mostly cloudy with showers.

Whanganui, Taihape and Manawatu

Increasing fine spells.

Wellington and Horowhenua Kapiti Coast, also Wairarapa

Showers with hail and strong southerlies in exposed places, clearing this afternoon or evening. Fine tomorrow, apart from evening showers with a strong southerly change.

Nelson, Buller and Westland

Fine, with frosts tomorrow morning.

Marlborough and Canterbury

Scattered showers, clearing this afternoon. Fine tomorrow with morning frosts, then showers developing in the afternoon.

Otago, Southland and Fiordland

Mainly fine, but showers developing about the south coast this evening, spreading elsewhere tomorrow morning, then easing from afternoon. Frosts tomorrow morning.

Chatham Islands

Rain developing this afternoon, easing to isolated showers tomorrow.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Saturday

For the North Island, Showers in the east easing, and also a few early showers about Wellington and Taranaki. Fine elsewhere. For the South Island, showers in the Far South as well as some morning showers about Canterbury and Marlborough. Fine elsewhere.

Sunday

Mainly fine for most. Isolated showers in the west from Taranaki to Wellington, and for Buller, northern Westland, and the far south.

Monday

Mainly fine for most, apart from isolated showers in the west and far south. Showers becoming widespread about Fiordland later.

And at the Chathams

Showers and fresh to strong southwesterlies, both easing on Monday.
