Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday

The Situation

A ridge of high pressure lies over the North Island today, while a northwest flow strengthens over the south of the South Island. Tomorrow, a front from over the south Tasman Sea moves north over the South Island.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland and Auckland

Cloudy periods. The odd shower clearing this afternoon.

Waikato to Wellington, including the central high country

Cloudy periods. A few showers developing about the Tararua Range tomorrow.

Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, and Gisborne to Wairarapa

Mainly fine. Isolated showers about the ranges this afternoon and evening.

Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury

Mostly fine, but isolated showers possible about the ranges this afternoon and evening. Scattered rain about Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast tomorrow evening.

Buller and Westland

Mostly cloudy. Patchy drizzle today, mainly in Westland. Rain spreading north tomorrow afternoon, briefly heavy in Westland.

Otago and Southland

Scattered rain clearing to fine spells this afternoon. Rain spreading north from late tomorrow morning, then clearing later.

Fiordland

Periods of rain, with some heavy falls tomorrow, clearing later.

Chatham Islands

Partly cloudy.

Friday

North Island: Cloudy periods with scattered rain in the west, mainly south of Auckland. Mainly fine elsewhere with isolated showers. South Island: Occasional rain in the north, clearing late. Isolated showers elsewhere clearing later.

Saturday

North Island: Scattered rain or showers for most, but only isolated showers for Wellington and Wairarapa. South Island: Mostly fine, but isolated afternoon and evening showers inland north of Dunedin.

Sunday

North Island: Scattered showers for most, but mainly fine for Wellington and Wairarapa. South Island: Mainly fine, chance of a shower.

And at the Chathams

Strong southwesterlies with a few showers on Friday. Showers clearing during Saturday and fine spells increasing. Partly cloudy on Sunday and southwesterlies turn northwest.
