United States President Joe Biden has addressed the nation after Republican Donald Trump stormed to victory in the presidential elections.

Projections have Trump returning to the White House after clinching a number of battleground states in the country's east.

Biden said he hoped for a smooth and peaceful transition to the new administration.

On Thursday, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris called Trump to concede the race.

The impact of Trump's election on New Zealand includes household finances and protectionist trade policies.
