Few musical ventures involve more risk than staging an opera, from the venue to the singers, to the orchestra: then you have to persuade people to go to it.
But that hasn’t stopped Wellington Opera’s artistic director, Matthew Ross, from stepping into the breach.
The company launched its latest production, Donizetti’s Lucia de Lammermoor in the city’s St James Theatre, or Saturday night.
Word is that musically the production’s a triumph. The question now is: Can it cover costs, and how much is it dependent on support from private backers?
