    (4) Mozart strikes out (June 1781)

In March 1781 Mozart was called away from the success of Idomeneo in Munich to attend his employer Archbishop Colloredo's residence in Vienna. Frustrated by this, he quit the Archbishop's service in June, to go free-lance in Vienna. His father Leopold was bitterly opposed, and Mozart therefore had to challenge two authorities, and even challenge the normal career structure for professional musicians. He banked everything on his talent and craft, and his ability to make a success in the demanding environment of Vienna. But this meant that negotiation between personal expression and commercial needs became an ongoing issue for him (RNZ)
