    The piercing oboe or shehnai played by Bismillah Khan welcomed India's Independence in 1947. Allan Thomas describes how it went on to become a well loved instrument in classical music concerts (RNZ)

    (8) Beirut

    Beirut is the brainchild of Zach Condon of Santa Fe, New Mexico. At age 16 while travelling in Europe, Condon was exposed to Balkan gypsy music. He was most notably inspired by the Boban Marković Orchestra, a brass ensemble led by the famous Serbian trumpet player. In 2006, at the worldly age of 20, he released two Balkan-inspired recordings as Beirut and went on to record three more in 2007 (RNZ) (Programme 9 Fri 8.05pm)
