    Sudanese trance music

Bride of the Zaris the debut album from Sudanese/Egyptian collective Rango. The band takes its name from the traditional Sudanese xylophone, an important instrument in ritual and celebration music. The rango was brought to Egypt nearly 200 years ago by Sudanese slaves, but by the second half of the 20th century it was struggling to survive against the growing dominance of Arabic pop music. Thanks to some dedicated sleuthing in the 1990s by Egyptian musicologist Zakaria Ibrahim, rango player Hassan Bergamon El Nagger was tracked down in Cairo. Together they went in search of other musicians and the result was the band, Rango (30 IPS HOR21948)
