    AfroCubism: Cuba meets Mali

It was supposed to happen in 1996. Malians Bassekou Kouyate and Djelimady Tounkara were to come to Cuba and record an album with some of the country's finest musicians. But for reasons nobody's quite got to the bottom of, the Africans never arrived. Producer Nick Gold asked Cuban guitarist Eliades Ochoa if he could get together a group of musicians, not wanting to waste the already-booked studio time. And so - serendipitously - the Buena Vista Social Club was born. But that's another story.

It took another 14 years before the Malian and Cuban musicians came together in the recording studio, and today in Global Sounds we'll hear the results (World Circuit WCD085)
