    It's essential for instrument makers to have a passion for the traditions of working with wood. In Melbourne, Joanne Saunders lathes woods from Australia and abroad to create her delicately crafted recorders. And, in Armidale, New South Wales, Peter Biffin uses wood and other natural materials for his vast array of plucked and bowed instruments including the tarhu, a new instrument of his own design.     This, Gould's second major radio essay, was first broadcast in 1969. It's about the province of Newfoundland and the title refers to the fact the island only entered the Canadian confederation in 1949. The underlying theme is about isolation, in this case Newfoundland being isolated historically from the rest of Canada and geographically by being an island - Glenn Gould (CBC Records PSCD 20315)
