New Zealand Rat Rescue started in 2008 to take in unwanted, dumped, pregnant and surrendered domestic rats. Trudi Hazlitt-Black, one of many volunteers around the country who take in the rats, says they are intelligent and playful creatures, worthy of our love and respect.

New Zealand's first motor camp, the Tui Glen Reserve in Henderson, opened in December 1924 and developed into a popular summer holiday destination. The camp closed in 2001 and the buildings fell into disrepair. But in a project initiated by the departed Waitakere City Council, 10 of the historic cabins will be restored.

Dutch carpenter, Johan Huibers, has spent the last few years building an ark identical in size to the one Noah built at God's behest. He's braved the wrath of his neighbours and waded through miles of official red tape to construct a vessel 300 cubits long and 50 cubits wide. A cubit is a biblical measurement, the distance between your fingertips and your elbow.
