70 years ago, when the New Zealanders were fighting in Cassino, a soldier took a small 16th or 17th century statute from the Abbey which had remained with the soldier's family for 70 years.
The son of the soldier who took the Statue, asked Robertson to take the artifact back while he was in Europe on another quest: to visit the grave of his father's cousin who had been among the many airmen shot down near the village of Markelo in the Eastern Netherlands during the war. Three bombers came down near Markelo, taking the lives of 18 men. Darryl Robertson spent years tracking down families of the crewmen whose names are on a memorial unveiled last month for the 70th anniversary commemorations.
