It's been a year since the tragic events that unfolded on Whakaari / White Island.
Several services are being held in Whakatāne today to pay tribute to the 22 people who lost their lives, those injured and the families who's lives were changed forever when the island erupted.
Local Baptist church senior Pastor Peter Foster attended a public service at Mataatua Reserve and speaks to Jesse.
