1:15 Pack a puffer to visit pacific neighbours this year!

It's often a nice way to break up the cold wet months here in Aotearoa, a quick trip to our pacific island neighbours to sun ourselves and escape the rain.

But this year it's not necessarily going to be any warmer in the usually tropical nations to the north of us.

NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll talks to Jesse about why booking a pacific holiday this winter might not mean leaving your puffer jacket behind.

1.35 A landmark collection of the written natural history of Aotearoa in the 19th century

'Letters Of A Naturalist: The Field Accounts of Richard Henry of Resolution Island' is a beautiful new book featuring photos, letters and field notes from the late 1800s.

The notes are detailing very early trans-locations of birds when mustelids first started to sweep Aotearoa.

It's all come from the work of pioneer conservationist Richard Treacy Henry (1845-1929), champion of our flightless native birds and New Zealand’s first wildlife ranger.

Victoria Jaenecke is the co-author of this book, she speaks to Jesse.

3:10 When technology takes over from nature

Nature no longer calls the shots with new advances in a  field where technology meets biology giving us new medicines, sustainable jet fuel, lab-grown meat and more. Synthetic Biology allows us to engineer living cells and it's attracting billions of dollars in investment, including a big player in the bio-fuels space here in New Zealand. Ted Anton is a Professor of English and an award winning science writer who introduces us to the humans behind this science-fiction like world.  His new book  tells the stories of people on the frontier of discovery and the policy makers trying to keep up with them. It's called Programmable Planet: The Synthetic Biology Revolution.
