CRITTER T-SHIRTS ARE BACK

To celebrate all things Aotearoa native fauna and flora we have a new Critter of the Week t-shirts back for 2023.

The super talented Giselle Clarkson has designed a new image for the shirts and tote bags.

There is a cut off date for pre-orders so they arrive in time for Christmas deliveries to friends and loved ones.

Follow this link and place your order. Five dollars for each t-shirt and tote bag sold goes back to environmental volunteer groups around Aotearoa which are working hard to keep our unique critters safe from extinction.

Order your COTW 2023 t-shirts and or totes by clicking here.

1:15 Insects as food trend not taking off in Aotearoa

For a while now we've been looking at insects as a menu item for not only it's high protein value to our diets but because they don't need a lot of land to be produced and they have a tiny little insect sized carbon footprint.

But those factors don't appear to be enough to convince people to put more crickets on their plates!

AgResearch and Lincoln University researcher and PHD student Caitlin Hyde has been researching the insects as food trend.

It's Friday and our Critter of the Week Day.

Behind the critter weekly chat Nic and Jesse do is a big team of researchers and writers making the feature a seamless part of the Afternoons show.

Now one of those of clever team members Lily Duval, has drawn 50 of the critters we've talked about over the years and put them in a book that's being released next week.  It's called Critters of Aoteaora.

3:35 Critter of the Week: Beauveria bassiana

The icing sugar fungus, Beauveria bassiana, is a stealthy member of the fungi kingdom. When it comes into contact with an insect or another invertebrate, it invades the critter and starts growing inside it. After a few days, the host dies and its body erupts in a powdery white mould that looks like icing sugar.
