After creating and collaborating musically for many years, award winning songwriter, producer and teacher, AJA (Ngāti Raukawa, Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Porou), has just released a long-awaited, much anticipated album Kāwai.

Her waiata ‘Te Iho’, written with Byllie-Jean and Chris Wethey, took home the Maioha Silver Scroll Award, and just recently she performed at the APRA Silver Scroll Awards, reimagining Anna Coddington’s song Kātuarehe.

2.30  Essential NZ Albums: Doug Jerebine - Is Jesse Harper

Recorded in London in 1969, these recordings provided classic material for Kiwi rockers The Human Instinct yet the originals remained largely unheard until their discovery and release in 2012. Nick Bollinger takes a close listen, and uncovers the story of how they came to be made – and what became of their maker.

3:15  Porridge Radio on burnout: ‘Healing isn’t linear’

British indie rock band Porridge Radio, has received high praise for her raw honest songwriting, earning the band a Mercury Prize nomination in 2020.

Their new album is no different, as frontperson Dana Margolin wrestles with the confusion and exhaustion of heartbreak and burnout.

It’s called ‘Clouds In The Sky They Will Always Be There For Me’ produced by Big Thief engineer Dom Monks.

Singer Dana joins Maggie Tweedie to share her story, and celebrate her new music.

4pm The Mixtape: Paddy Gower - from pessimist to optimist

Our guest picking the music is New Zealand journalist Patrick Gower.

Paddy started his career on the graveyard shift at the Herald, moving on to become a self-described ‘attack dog’ political reporter. Later he held down the tough job as TV3/Newshub political editor for nearly 15 years, before moving to Stuff where he flips the script and focuses on positive news for a change.

This year, Paddy has also been on air here at RNZ, and we’ve just heard he’ll be hosting ‘Summer Report’ alongside Alexa Cook which kicks off January 13, keeping you company throughout the holiday period.

Paddy Gower’s 'This is the f#$%ing News’ skit became a viral meme a decade ago. It's now the title of his new memoir, podcast and national tour around the country which he’s right in the middle of.
