9:35 Do animals talk to us?

Con Slobodchikoff says that humans don't have the monopoly on thought or structured language.

An animal behaviourist and Professor Emeritus at Northern Arizona University, Con has shown that some animals do have their own vocabulary, the ability to describe what they see - and what they can't.

His next project is a type of animal translator which Con hopes will revolutionise the way we see, interact and communicate with, the animals that share our world.

He joins Anna from Arizona to explain.

In England, artist Francis Barraud (1856-1924) painted his brother's dog Nipper listening to the horn of an early phonograph during the winter of 1898. Victor Talking Machine Company began using the symbol in their trademark, His Master's Voice, in 1900, and Nipper joined the RCA family in 1929.

9:45 Native species of liverwort mimics medicinal cannabis effect

Medicinal cannabis products have boomed in popularity over the last few years, and now scientists have confirmed a native species of liverwort shares some of its elements.

Scientists and iwi have been studying the plant, known as wairuakohu, across the North Island for seven years.

They've found compounds similar to THC and CBD, which could be used to develop natural health products for pain management.

Richard Espley, a scientist at Plant and Food research, joins Anna to explain.
