Man accused of killing former gang president pleads not guilty

The man accused of killing a former gang president in Lower Hutt has pleaded not guilty in the Wellington High Court.

Wipuhara Kapene is accused of murdering Albert Enoka after he was shot dead on 10 December at a Naenae property in Seddon Street.

He appeared on charges of murder and possessions of a firearm via audio-visual link on Friday.

Enoka was a member of the Tribesmen gang and a former president of the Rebels Motorcycle Club's Christchurch chapter.

He was found with critical injuries but died at the scene at 3.15pm.

Kapene was found and arrested on Christmas Eve after a search.

He first appeared and was named in the Wellington District Court on 27 December.

His trial date has been set for 2 March 2026.
