Police say the driver of a car that hit a power pole in Waikato has died.
They were called to the single-vehicle crash, south of Te Kowhai near Hamilton, at 4.40pm on Tuesday.
Police initially said the driver suffered critical injuries and in a later statement said they had died at the scene.
The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and contractors were on site for the power pole.
Horotiu Road south of Te Kowhai remained closed at 8.30pm and traffic was being diverted at Woolrich Road.
