Kim Dotcom: Which side are you on?

6:00 am on 11 January 2014

Kim Dotcom is seen as a super hero by some and a super villain to others.

The flamboyant internet millionaire is certainly the bad guy in Hollywood’s eyes. As most New Zealanders are aware, he was arrested in a blockbuster police raid in January 2012 after being indicted on piracy charges in the United States. The battle to extradite him to the United States to face charges is on-going, and continues to attract huge interest in the media.

This week US current affairs show 60 Minutes profiled Dotcom and his case, enticing viewers in a promo to take a “tour of his golden cage”.

The story also features an interview with the former head of the investigation into Dotcom's Megaupload site.

Shawn Henry, former FBI executive assistant director says the site was “no different than if somebody has a warehouse where stolen property is being dropped off. If you created the environment that facilitated it, and you encouraged it, and you incentivised people by paying them to drop off stolen property, I think that you are complicit.”

Meanwhile, about the time the 60 Minutes piece went to air, Vice.com released a mini-documentary about Dotcom.

“He's a big crazy rich guy that does crazy things,” presenter Tim Pool says in the opening scene.

As well as talking to Dotcom about the police raid and the piracy case, Pool rides a Segway at the Dotcom mansion, lays down backing vocals on a Dotcom song, and plays video games.

No sign of the FBI here.
