Dr Karen Thorn is a postdoctoral fellow at Victoria University of Wellington working in the Ultrafast Laser Spectros-copy Group led by MacDiarmid Institute Co-Director Prof Justin Hodgkiss. So she is perfectly placed to critique how our hero makes a laser out of a golden platter, a bowl and some precious gems.
