    Professor John Steele was the first New Zealander to become a professional musicologist, and the first to achieve international repute, largely for his work on Italian music of the late 16th- and early 17th- centuries. He was on the music staff of Otago University for almost 30 years. After his retirement in 1993 Professor Steele continued his work of editing collections of early music. He passed away last year. In 1997 he recorded this conversation with Des Wilson (RNZ)
