8:00 The Shock of the New

Penelope Randall-Davis (sop), Cantillation, Sydney Symphony/Gianluigi Gelmetti

Every piece of music was once "contemporary", shocking, confronting, disturbing and often provocative, as it ventured into unknown territory. Legend has it that, on hearing the opening of Beethoven's First Symphony (not shocking by today's standards, but disturbing in its time), Haydn, offended by the uncompromising modernity of the first bars, got up and left immediately. To our ears the story sounds strange; we have become accustomed to the sound world of classical music, and are perhaps less easily confronted by it

Tonight's Shock of the New performance by the Sydney Symphony intends to surprise the listener. Usually one knows from the programme what pieces will be performed and one hears a piece from its very beginning to the very end. The composer's ideas are often expected before they are even played. Shock of the New is made up of movements, fragments and short pieces. The audience is not told in advance what they are, because the concert is about the ideas behind the music and about how much impact a new idea can have

Chief conductor and artistic director Gianluigi Gelmetti, who has developed Shock of the New, conducts this programme. The juxtaposition of pieces in this performance will stimulate the experience of hearing familiar music from a fresh perspective. Be ready for a thrilling musical journey! (recorded in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall by ABC)
