    (7) DONIZETTI: Maria Stuarda, an opera in two acts

    This is based on Friedrich Schiller's 1800 play "Maria Stuart" in which the author imagines a confrontation between Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I. Donizetti wrote a number of operas set in Tudor England and this work, along with Anna Bolena and Roberto Devereux, are sometimes referred to as the "Three Donizetti Queens"
