    Letters to Sibelius

Five programmes in the form of letters from Marshall Walker to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Walker is a retired Professor of English who lives in Hamilton. He grew up in Glasgow and at an early age he was hooked by the music of Sibelius. These programmes recount episodes in Walker's life and the powerful effect that Sibelius had in them

    (3) Valse Triste

Walker's mother informs him that Sibelius's music - specifically the famous Valse Triste - was also important in her own family. We hear stories about Walker's grandfather and uncle, both of whom he never met. The grandfather was killed in a horrific accident and the uncle died on the Salonika front in World War I (RNZ)
