RNZ Concert recordings win international recognition

Three very different live performances were awarded at a prestigious radio ceremony in New York.

RNZ Concert’s music production team has been recognised at the prestigious New York Festivals Radio Awards, winning the only gongs given for the craft of Live Sound in this year's competition.

This ground-breaking project, reimagining beloved songs from across the Pacific with full orchestra and choir. The recording, by sound engineer Darryl Stack and music producer David McCaw, was awarded SILVER.

The recording was also recognised at the Pacific Music Awards last year (Best Pacific Gospel Artist: Signature Choir - Mana Moana) and is a finalist for best music feature at the NZ Radio Awards in June.

This is an orchestral arrangement of Kingi’s psychedelic-soul album, Shake That Skinny Ass All The Way To Zygertron (winner of the best Māori pop album/Kaipūoru Māori in the 2018 Waiata Māori Music Awards).

It was recorded during the Auckland Phil's second annual Matariki concert by RNZ sound engineer Adrian Hollay, assistant sound engineer Rangi Powick and producer Tim Dodd, and received BRONZE.

This commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the Christchurch Mosque attacks brought together musical influences from New Zealand, Greek, Moroccan, Arabic, Persian, African-American, and Russian cultures, and included the world premiere of a new work from acclaimed New Zealand composer John Psathas.

The recording by music engineer and producer David Houston with assistance from sound engineer Marc Chesterman also received BRONZE.

This recording has also been broadcast on public radio stations in Estonia, Lithuania, Portugal and United States of America.

RNZ podcasts Nellie's Baby and Uncut Diamond Daniella were also finalists in the 2025 New York Festivals Radio Awards.
