1:15 Managing migraine pain, a mixed bag

An estimated 753,000 New Zealanders live with migraines but despite their prevalence, there is surprisingly little known about their cause, and how best to treat them.

Yesterday, neurologist Dr Ray Bose spoke to Nine to Noon's Kathryn Ryan about drug and non-drug treatments for migraines.

Today we speak to Dr Fiona Imlach about her just published study looking into how Kiwis are managing their migraines - and its not a pretty picture.

1:25 Women's influence on Tūhura Otago Museum

Tūhura Otago Museum was established during the global peak of museum-building.

This 'cathedral to science' however, has long overlooked many of its contributors.

Dr Rosi Crane - Honorary Curator of Science History - has taken a deep-dive into the archives and source material and in doing so, discovered many women played a pivotal role in the museum's history.

Her research is titled: 'Women Naturalists in Tūhura Otago Museum'. Rosi speaks to Mark.

Today Mark catches up with Dunedin motorhead Andy Martin.

He last spoke to Andy in December while hosting RNZ Nights when Andy made the final of the US Biltwell People's Champ - an  international motorcycle-building competition.

It turns out his custom built chopper has beat out the competition - making Andy the first person outside the States to be crowned champion.

3:35 Critter of the Week

This week's critter is the piriwai or spiny gilled mayfly, Coloburiscus humeralis. They spend most of their lives as flat-bodied nymphs, clinging to rocks in swift, clear streams and rivers. Adult piriwai have beautiful translucent wings and no mouthparts - they're just looking to reproduce before they die, only living for a few hours or days. Catching sight of piriwai is a good sign that the stream or river is healthy.
