For the past week, The Spinoff has slowly published their critic’ picks for the best New Zealand TV shows since the turn of the century.

How do classics like ‘Country Calendar’ stack up against newcomers like ‘New Zealand Today’?

Now that the complete list is out, The Spinoff senior writer Alex Casey joins Jesse to break it down.

1:25 Competition heats up for Young Horticulturist of the Year

Next week, five budding horticulturists from around the motu will battle it out for the coveted title of Young Horticulturist of the Year.

They come from five sectors: growing, viticulture, plant producers, arboriculture and amenity.

One of the finalists, Kyla Mathewson – who has come out top in the amenity sector – speaks to Jesse.

1:35 Community works to restore historical miners’ hall

Rūnanga is a small town on the West Coast with a rich history, a large part of which revolves around Rūnanga Miners' Hall.

Originally constructed in 1908, ownership of the hall has now transferred to a local trust, who are determined to restore it.

Trust member Jo Hart speaks to Jesse about its history and importance today.

Today, he gives Jesse a preview live from RNZ’s Christchurch studio.

To celebrate World Reptile Day, we're talking about the elusive and cryptic Moko-pāpā Waitaha gecko, Woodworthia cf. brunnea. Waitaha geckos have complex olive-grey patterns on their backs, which help them blend perfectly into their rocky and lichen-covered habitats.
