Two medal hopes fell just short overnight for New Zealand.

Sam Gaze entered the men's mountain biking event as World Champion, but he didn't have the legs on a scorching Paris day, finishing in 6th spot.

The New Zealand equestrian team of Tim Price, Jonelle Price and Clarke Johnstone were also short of their best, finishing in 8th in the team standings.

Tim Price also finished 8th in the individual event.

The Black Ferns Sevens team are into the semifinals of their tournament and look a very strong chance to secure a medal, while triathlete Hayden Wilde is also expected to perform well for his event overnight.
