High school footballers in American Samoa have been given new sports equipment courtesy of the Troy and Theodora Polamalu Foundation.

Troy Polamalu retired from the NFL in April after a 12-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He's in American Samoa with other pro-football players and coaches to hold clinics.

The foundation also brought medical supplies, a team of doctors and nurses, and has been distributing new uniforms, helmets and other sports equipment for local schools.

A local coach, Sam Nu'usolia, says the students needed new gear for safety reasons.

"A lot of these kids, the schools, they don't have insurance. So with the new gear they will be protected. Hopefully nobody gets hurts. I'm so glad Troy and Theodoro continue to do what they are doing."
