In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Lorde shared a short TikTok that appeared to tease the first taste of her next album.

In the clip, she could be seen bounding through New York's Washington Square Park to a moody synth-pop track with confessional lyrics.

"Since I was 17 / I gave you everything / Now we wake from a dream / Well baby, what was that?"

Beyond recent features on Charli xcx's Brat, and Marlon Williams' Te Whare Tīwekaweka, the teaser is the first sign of a new Lorde album since 2021's Solar Power.

So what else does the teaser tell us?

"It indicates that we've left the beach from the last album, we're going back to the dancefloor, the beat is higher and heartbreak has returned," says longtime Lorde fan Ben McCook-Weir.

"I think new music is very close, within reach."

The teaser sent the internet into a frenzy, with TikTok users flooding the comments with reactions like, "This is the happiest day of my life" and "Life is worth living again".

Lorde shared a screenshot of a single comment to her Instagram story - "WAIT WHAT?????" Her Instagram has otherwise been wiped of all previous posts.

Lorde's record label, Universal, have been approached for comment.
