Last night New Zealanders doing amazing work across a variety of fields and projects were honoured at the Kiwibank New Zealander of Year awards.

The 2023 winner of the title New Zealand of the year, Te Pou Whakaare o Aotearoa was named as Professor Rangi Mātāmua (Ngāi Tūhoe), who's been dubbed the man behind Matariki!

He talks to Jesse about his achievements and recognition.

1:25  World Avocado Congress to be held in Aotearoa

Kiwis are crazy for avocados, and so it makes sense that this year's World Avocado Congress is going to be held here.

Over four days in Auckland next week, more than 1100 people representing the avo industries of 32 countries will descend on the Aotea Centre.

They'll share strategies and trade secrets, and have bold discussions around the state of agritech, climate change, the impact of Covid, and more.

1.:30 Jury finds in favour Gwyneth Paltrow in ski collision lawsuit

Forget the Trump case - in the US there's been another court room drama gripping the world - Gwyneth Paltrow being sued by an optometrist claiming she skied into him causing life changing injuries.

A Utah jury has found that he wasn't to believed and ruled in favour of Gwyneth Paltrow who couter sued Terry Sanderson for one dollar and her legal costs.

Sanderson was seeking more than $US300,000 - down from the millions he originally wanted from the actress.

1:35 Tourists encouraged to come back to Hawke's Bay

Hawke's Bay was one of the most affected areas when Cyclone Gabrielle arrived in February.

But now an audit of the main city has found 85 percent of visitor businesses are back open and operating as normal.

With that, local businesses are keen to welcome visitors back to the city to give their economy a much needed boost.

Hawke's Bay Tourism Chief Executive Hamish Saxton talks to Jesse about how visitors can help the region through its recovery.

1:45 Food waste highlighted in Waipā after discarded food served to councillors

Waipā District councillors were overjoyed when they walked into their Tuesday meeting and saw a glorious morning tea spread waiting for them.

Their joy turned to disappointment though when they were instructed not to eat any of the food, as it had all been pulled from local rubbish bags.

The plan was hatched by Waipā waste minimisation officer Sally Fraser to illustrate the extend of our food waste problem. Sally talks to Jesse.

Chef and Shared Kitchen founder, Julie Biuso, has a great recipe just in time for school holidays that could be a breakfast treat, desert or afternoon tea.

It's a little different from normal 'crumbles' as it uses cornflakes in the crumble, bound to be a winner with smaller diners at home.
