A big Aotearoa New Zealand lineup has been announced for Whānau Mārama New Zealand International Film Festival, ahead of other international works.

Opening night goes to director Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu's We Were Dangerous, which won a special Jury Award for Filmmaking in the Narrative Feature Competition at South by Southwest in the US.

Also featured are Jonathan Ogilvie's Head South, following screening at the Sydney Film Festival, and Christine Jeffs' adaptation of Cark Shuker's celebrated novel A Mistake

Among the other Kiwi highlights are the Lucy Lawless directed documentary Never Look Away, Bridget Sutherland's doco on the late maverick performance artist Peter Roche Night Piece and Katie Wolfe's adaptation of her celebrated play The Haka Party Incident.

A commission by Lisa Reihana for the National Gallery of Singapore's Roof Garden Gallery opened to the public this week.

The three-sided sculpture 'Glisten' features 114,000 shimmer discs which shift and sparkle in the breeze. The work's patterns are inspired by Malaysian Songket and Māori Tāniko weaving patterns. You'll find a spectacular image of it on our webpage.

It's been a week of high profile governance announcements.

Six donated works include a Charles Fredrick Goldie portrait, Indecision: An Arawa Child and works by Peter McIntyre, Raymond McIntyre, Jaqueline Fahey, Olivia Spencer-Bower and Richard Killeen.

Art historian, curator and author Tony Mackle has died peacefully aged 77. Mackle worked at the National Art Gallery and then Te Papa as a curator and collections manager from 1980 to 2013.

And finally Fulbright New Zealand and Creative New Zealand have announced actor and storyteller David Fane as the recipient of the 2024 Pacific Writer's Residency.
