Asbestos fibres are leaching into Christchurch's drinking water from ageing underground pipes.
Ōtautahi has nearly 800 kilometres of asbestos-cement piping; and nationwide, that figure is around 9,000 kilometres.
When laid, the pipes were expected to last about a century, but they're deteriorating more quickly than expected.
