Aucklanders still cleaning up thunderstorm

From Morning Report, 8:17 am on 22 March 2022

Aucklanders are still cleaning up after a severe thunderstorm swept through the region on Monday.

NIWA says Tāmaki Makarau experienced its second wettest hour on record and there were more than 9000 lightning strikes across the top of the North Island.

Auckland Council says its teams responded to around 40 critical requests for service relating to downed trees, and over 400 relating to flooding incidents on public land.

This comes as more severe weather is predicted for the rest of the country.
